Orange Bowknots

Ingredients

Dough


1 tablespoon or 1 1/2 packages (10 g) active dry yeast

1/2 cup warm water

1 cup milk

1/3 cup shortening or butter (Gayle used butter)

1/3 cup sugar

1 teaspoon salt

2 eggs, well beaten

1/4 cup orange juice

2 tablespoons grated orange peel

5 cups all-purpose flour


Icing


2 tablespoons orange juice

1 teaspoon orange peel

1 cup powdered sugar

Directions

Dough

Combine yeast and water and let yeast dissolve.

Combine mile, shortening or butter, sugar and salt.
Add yeast to the mixture and stir.

Add eggs, orange juice, and peel. Beat well.

Add the flour slowly. Mix to a soft dough.
Let rest for 10 minutes.
Knead until the dough is smoot and elastic.
Place in a greased bowl to rise until doubled in size.

Punch down and let rest.

Make snakes and tie into bowknots.
Placed on a greased cookie sheet.
Let bowknots rise in a warm place until double in bulk.

Bake at 400° for 12 minutes.

Icing

Blend icing ingredients until well and fully mixed.
Brush on the hot rolls with a pastry brush.
